Chapter Thirty-Two
Alex stood on the upper bridge of the Glitterdome surrounded by people she barely knew. The wall of glass made for good viewing of the eastern part of the city, where the majority of the fighting was happening. Fires illuminated the night sky at points from as far north as the sixth ward to parts of the ninth, but the worst of the battle was happening just northwest of them near the Spire.
The white and blue lights of sorcerous energies rose like wisps of flame or expanding bubbles before exploding into luminous dust. Alex could see where the demonic army had been as the lights from the businesses were dark, either from destruction or the attempt to stay hidden. She dearly hoped it was the latter.
A secondary section of darkness was happening in the eighth ward. She'd seen the new combatants spilling out, but it had been growing dark at the time, so she couldn't identify much except their existence.
"It somehow seems worse at night, even though I can't see them," said Zayn, shaking his head with concern.
"Darkness hides movement, making it easier to obscure numbers and developments. Your mind is filling in the black space with more demons," said Alex.
A blank look from Zayn had her adding, "Sorry."
"Don't say sorry, tell us how we're going to get out of this. If it's possible."
"Itâs a war zone down there, especially with the new group of demons. We need to go help them before it's too late," said Nandi, heading back to the stairs where they'd come up. Lennie reluctantly followed, though he checked back to the group hopefully.
"We need a strategy first, or we're just going to get ground to dust," said Alex.
Nandi screwed up her face. "I've already lost friends. I know more are dying even as we speak. We can't just stand up here and pretend it's not happening. I thought we were going to do something."
"We are."
"It doesn't look like it," said Nandi.
Kitty, who'd been quiet since her sister's death and had been staring into the darkness with barely a twitch, turned suddenly.
"If someone's going to figure out how we survive this, it's Alex. Give her a chance. You can't win a war by rushing to failure."
Nandi squeezed the bridge of her nose between forefinger and thumb.
"How?" she asked after opening her eyes. "No offense, but I didn't see you during the battle in the arena. You were up here hiding out. What Hall are you even from?"
A tightness constricted Alex's chest. She knew how this would go. "Gamemakers."
"You're kidding me, right?"
Alex was about to speak, but Kitty stepped forward. "Think about it. We need magic, right? But we need a strategy more. I've seen her mind work. She's good. Really good. She saw stuff in the heat of battle that I would have never noticed. Please, we need to work together."
The big Protector put his enormous hand on Nandi's shoulder. "We need to stick together."
Alex could see the pain in Nandi's eyes. They'd all lost so much.
